THE SUN IS shining, the birds are singing, and IâVE GOT A GUN, IâVE GOT A GUN, IâVE GOT A GUN.
Maybe the fact I had practically no sleep last night has driven me completely insane.
Seriously.
Iâm carrying a gun in the waistband of my jeans right now and nobody knows about it.
As I head for the docks, I can still hardly believe any of this is happening.
What the hell did I witness last night? Why was that poor girl being carted about like some kind of possession? And what the fuck was going on with that cop, man?
My headâs spinning. I wish I knew where Krystal was. The thought of that sweet girl being caught up in this⦠itâs too much to take.
But⦠whatâs my game plan here? Itâs not like I can go waving a gun around in Ozzyâs face. He definitely wouldnât give me any answers without a fight, and most probably heâd just call the cops on me. The crooked cops.
By the time I arrive, Iâm sweating in my hoodie. Itâs not even that hot of a day â Iâm just so damn worked up.
âYou look like shit,â says Ozzy when he sees me.
Even though heâs just insulted me, though, he seems to be acting a little less uptight around me today. Like, heâs not staring at me anymore; heâs just looking at me like a normal person. And there was even the tiniest hint of a smile at the corners of his mouth.
This is good, actually. Iâve been a little worried that Ozzy saw me spying on the shit that went down with the girl in the crate last night. Or that, somehow, he had just started to sense that Iâm an enemy. That Iâm carrying a gun right now and have been fantasizing about planting a bullet in that evil skull of his.
But if heâs starting to trust me, thatâs so much better. If he trusts me, Iâll be able to get a lot more out of him. So Iâm going to do everything I can to stay on the right side of the jackass, no matter what it takes.
âI didnât get much sleep,â I say, forcing a yawn.
âOh yeah?â Ozzy smirks. âUp all night fucking some unlucky bitch, eh?â
It takes all my reserves to laugh at this. Damn, if I make it out of this situation alive I deserve a damn Oscar. âSomething like that,â I say.
âListen,â says Ozzy. âYou know the ropes. Itâs a sunny day and Iâm thirsty. Iâm gonna go sit down over there for a few hours. Sink a few beers.â He points at a bench at the waterâs edge, then looks me in the eye. âJust do like you did yesterday and youâll be fine.â
âSure,â I say with a shrug.
Iâm desperate to start gleaning more information, but I canât start asking questions yet. Itâd raise suspicions. So instead, I get to work. Hauling mystery crate after mystery crate off a bunch of different boats, hoping and praying each time that thereâs not some poor girl trapped inside it.
